Summary
Bessie proved to be a demanding lover and Mel had to take care to get to classes and study. He also got a part time job pumping gas to get time away from her.
Mel didn't really like the town of Chadron and wanted a bigger city. Before the college year ended he'd arranged to transfer to Milwaukee State Teacher’s College for the rest of his degree. He also bought an old car and rebuilt the engine.
Mel's roommate at Milwaukee was Herm Cholame.
Mel worked pumping gas in the warmer months and in a beer bar during the winters.
After graduating Mel had a teaching job lined up, but didn't really want to take it up. He continued pumping gas while sending out applications over the summer, until Frank Blixter drove up.
