Summary
Kirsten is musing about being pregnant at an age of 36 with her third child. Whilst in the bathroom, she is shocked to see a little black snake in the bathtub, which she kills with her hairdryer. Nine year-old Tiffany is happy to pick the snake up to take it to school for "show and tell". Mike had covered a City Council meeting at which the storm sewer separation issue had been discussed; the net was that the US Department of Natural Resources had turned them down for a grant but said that they needed to get moving on the project.
Mike realized that special tax assessment district was going to cost him and Kirsten, along with many other affected taxpayers, a substantial amount to pay for the project, and he thought that if they moved quickly before news of the tax increase got out, they might save themselves a substantial amount of money.
He realized that he might have a tough sell to convince Kirsten to move. Tiffany takes the dead snake to school. Linda Clark, her teacher, told her that she would take it to John Pacobel at the high school to find out what kind of snake it might be. At the Record-Herald office, Kirsten tells Mike about the snake and how she's been afraid to use the bathroom since then. It gives him a perfect opening to suggest to her that they sell the house and move to a place with its own septic system. They agree to meet with Binky Augsberg in the very near future.
