Buckshot was a North Carolina hillbilly friend of Buck Jacklin who started the 1953 season with MMSA. He was distant cousin to Hap and Junie. During testing he didn't seem to understand racing to put on a show not smash cars up. Spud cut the power with restrictor plates for the first race.^BR1-26

When Hap and Junie were injured in a crash at Schererville, Indiana and MMSA had to leave them. Buckshot stayed behind to get Hap and Junie home when the hospital released them.^BR1-28

He returned to MMSA at Mt. Clemens and drove the 27 car to a battle with Arlene Pewabic and almost won. He asked if he could keep that car. He won his fair share of races.^BR1-33

Buckshot worked on Hap's car at Daytona in 1954 and returned to MMSA provided he could have the 27 car again, having a reasonable season.^BR1-36
