Summary
From 1947 to 1950 Gil Evachevski was perhaps the best Marlin halfback ever. A member of the team which was unbeaten for four seasons. He was envied off the field for dating the beautiful cheerleader Barbara Matson. She refused his marriage proposal before going to college and Gil enlisted in the army knowing he was likely to be drafted anyway.
When nine-year-old Carrie Matson heard that Barbara had again rejected Gil in summer 1953 and sought him out to tell him “Don’t let her bother you. If you’ll wait for me to get out of high school, I’ll marry you.” Gil re-enlisted and was away from Spearfish Lake until 1961 when he kind of offered to marry her once again, and she kind of refused.
Now eighteen and graduated from high school Carrie again sought him out and reminded him of her offer. They married at West Turtle Lake Club by Rev. F. W. Ashtenfelter.
