"Sensei" is an honorific, not a name, and is used in addressing or describing another person (male or female) while showing respect. From the the Wikipedia entry for Sensi:

Sensei is a Japanese word that is literally translated as "person born before another". In general usage, it means "master" or "teacher", and the word is used as a title to refer to or address teachers, professors, professionals such as lawyers, CPA and doctors, politicians, clergymen, and other figures of authority. The word is also used to show respect to someone who has achieved a certain level of mastery in an art form or some other skill: accomplished puppeteers, novelists, musicians, and artists for example are addressed in this way.

In the Alone Together book, Jon and Tanisha take martial arts instruction in Atlanta for personal self defense. The Sensei owns the Dojo and is described as a middle-aged black man, thin and wiry with incredible moves. No first name or last name is ever given, just the honorific. AT11

When a situation arises that requires Jon and Tanisha to leave Atlanta in a hurry before Tanisha's brother came after her, Sensei and one of his other students assisted them and even followed their car until they were a good distance out of town. Sensei refused any form of payment, just asked them to pass the favor on.AT12
