Summary
On Scooter's fourth trip (at the end of which she would have her insurance qualifications to be a boatman), Louise should have led, but is not well enough. Al takes over as leader, although he feels he should have arranged things so that he could stay off the river as well.
At the Phantom Ranch ranger station Al telephones to find that Louise has inoperable terminal cancer, and isn't expected to survive, so he hikes out, leaving Crystal to lead, with Scooter as her assistant.
