Phil Specter was the pilot of Southern Airlines Flight 111 during the fictional hijacking in February 2002 as told in Chapter 31 and Chapter 32 of the book Magic Carpet. His co-pilot on that flight was Larry Johnson.

Phil is first seen as the pilot bleeding profusely from a throat wound. Larry was also wounded, with a knife wound in his chest. Luckily one of the passengers that stormed the cockpit in rescue was Dr. Milligan, a veterinarian, and he able to provide sufficient first aid to both.MC31

Col. Bruce Hadley is a friend of Phil and Larry's. As another captain with Southern Airlines, Bruce had flown with both of them and liked them. As a reserve officer in the Air Force at Keesler AFB, the new destination of the retaken plane, Bruce was selected to talk Jennlynn Swift through landing the totally unfamiliar full size Airbus A300 jet.MC32

By September 2002 both Phil and Larry had recovered and were flying again. Phil had a scar, but otherwise nothing he could complain about, although he did confess "I had a hard time getting back in the cockpit." He noticed her name on the passenger list and made it a point to met Jennlynn and personally thank her for her actions.MC34

Phil is described as "a tall, middle-aged man with four stripes on his sleeve."MC34
