Mike Hanneman retired from the Air Force as a one-star General. He was a graduate of the US Air Force Academy. To fill some time in retirement, he flies part-time for Skyhook Aviation and occasionally does consulting work, including with Lambdatron, although his preferred method of earning money seems to be fleecing golfers in side bets.
Mike's time in the Air Force has left him with very good connections in the Pentagon. He has been known to work as a facilitator between the military and outfits like Lambdatron. This work became apparent in Alone Together, such as when he helps play Project Swallowtail between the Navy and Air Force.AT17
Among the many jobs he undoubtedly did for the Air Force, Mike also worked as an assistant project officer on a high energy radar upgrade, such as used on the AWACS airplanes. He also worked on the bunker buster bomb, the GBU-28A, probably around 1991. His last tour flying was as a Mission Commander on an AWACS out of Nellis AFB, Nevada. In fact, he was onboard the AWACS on a training flight on Thanksgiving morning 1990MC5 when Jennlynn Swift rescued Will Hoffman at the Bar H Bar ranch. Not long after that, he took his retirement as a General.
Mike is married to Nancy and they have an unknown number of children and six grandchildren. He and his wife live in Phoenix. He still serves a weekend a month with the Arizona Air National Guard. He is described as "rugged-looking, well-dressed fiftyish man with light gray hair." MC18
As a golfer, Mike is possibly good enough to tour on the PGA, but prefers being a shark at local courses. He is known to have taken Stan Warshawski for a hundred a side at the Camelback Golf Club in Scottsdale. He is rumored to have "taken half the officers in the Pentagon to the cleaners on the golf course." AT14
Mike has several hundred hours flying planes like the Cessna 310 (the military designation is U-3) and thousands of hours in more purely military aircraft, like the C-130 or F-15. His is qualified as a multi-engine instructor and gives Jennlynn the brushup she needs as she moves up from single engine aircraft like Magic Carpet and Soiled Dove. He also helps her in the transition from propeller to jet aircraft when she buys a 1967 Learjet 24A which she names Skyhook.
Mike was hired to fly with Skyhook in the spring of 1995, before the company went official, and he's still piloting in October 1999.AT14
While Jennlynn is considering replacing Skyhook, Mike receives an offer for it and Jennlynn agrees the sale for more than they expected to get for it. He also located a Cessna Citation II-SP as a suitable replacement.HOG24
