Marlin is a name often associated with Spearfish Lake.

Wes gave the following background: In the olden days, before the dam that raised Spearfish Lake was built, there was a collection of smaller lakes that ended in a rapids where Indians used to go to spear fish. That gave the lake its name. Some years later, when a school mascot was being sought, someone realized that a marlin was a spearfish. Hence the name.
