Summary
Gerald Pepper drove as long as he thought Leah could stand on Friday before getting a motel room for the night. They continued their journey on Saturday and arrived in Tyler late morning. His first impression was that it wasn't a particularly good place to make a new start.
Talking to the sheriff he learns that there is a lot to do and that it might be five or six months to complete. While Leah is out of the room the sheriff tells Gerald more details about Elmer's suicide.
The sheriff warns him that the ranch house is in a mess and they may not want to live there until it is cleaned up a bit. Gerald says he doesn't have much choice as he is short of money.
