Carlos Gutierrez works as Randy Clark's assistant at Clark ConstructionHC3.

Carlos was one of several NMU students in the Construction Technology area that Randy had interviewed in an effort to come up with a summer intern, and / or someone who could be trained to be a possible assistant.PE19 He was at the top of the list and Randy felt that "he was far and away the most qualified person he'd found to fill the position."PE28

When Carlos arrives in Spearfish Lake on an interview trip both Randy and his grandfather, Brent Clark, interviewed him and agreed to hire him. Randy invites him to go along to a ski resort project meeting at Three Pines to see how he does in the field. After all, "Book knowledge was what was supposed to happen, as opposed to what really happened in real world construction practices". Carlos spots a snow job and he and Randy work together to stop it.PE28

In Chapter 15 of Hannegan's Cove Randy suggests that Carlos slide up to NMU and see what you can do about finding (a new management intern for the summer). I’ve been away from there longer than you have. Whoever you choose you’re going to have to live with since for the most part he’s going to be your assistant.

Carlos, along with Regina Lawrence was left behind to run the Clark Construction office while Randy joined the team that helped rebuild a house in Pass Christian after Hurricane Katrina.WL13.

In chapter 28 of Hannegan's Cove it's revealed that Carlos held a union journeyman (carpenters) card he’d earned before finishing college. He repairs Randy and Nicole Clarks back door after Joel Lancaster kicks it in.

Randy thinks a lot of Carlos, as this conversation (concerning management of Clark Construction) from Chapter 15 of Hannegan's Cove shows:

"Carlos, look. As my responsibilities to Clark Plywood grow, I’m going to have to shove more of this onto you. It may not happen soon, but keep in the back of your mind that you could be running this place someday. I don’t think soon, but we never know."

Carlos stopped and looked at Randy for a moment, to see that he really was dead serious. "You think?" he asked.

"Like I said, it’s a family business," Randy said slowly. "And there ain’t a hell of a lot of family. With Brent gone, there’s one less."

By August 2010 he was going by the name Carl. When he learned of Bob Coopshaw's death and knowing Randy was busy he decided he needed to go to speak to Bob's widow, Carol.BHF10

His father had died and he had consulted Carole Hunt who sent Windchime Mackenzie to help him.Windchime
