Adam Howland is a retired Norfolk and Western engineer, but around 1975 became the one and only engineer for the new C&SL Railroad. Adam had moved to the northern woods to enjoy the trout fishing around Spearfish Lake. "He hadn't known what he was getting himself in for when he had agreed to work for the little railroad part-time to stave off boredom when the trout season was closed."AF15
Adam taught Bud Ellsberg everything the first few years after that, especially the operating side of railroading.
Due to Hoglawing, the derogatory term for the federal regulation specifying the maximum number of hours per day of work, Adam and Bud would often overnight in the way-car. "Bud couldn't remember a time in those early years when the hoglawed caboose wasn't sitting within a hundred yards of an interesting-looking trout stream. "SX01
By 1981, business had increased and the C&SL had other engineers. Adam's usual run would be with the pair of Geeps (the Rock and the Chessie) to Warsaw and Walsenberg and back to Spearfish Lake one day, then Camden and back the next.
Adam would spend his winters in Florida and by 1981 he was talking about staying there.SX17
