January 9th 1:53 PM to 4:07 PM.
John Penny takes the Rock out to bring the broken down engine back to Spearfish Lake. Bud sleeps in the way car, not waking up until they are back at Spearfish Lake, Betty directs him to the shed where it appears the engine is beyond quick repair.
They start to think a little about how the loss of the paper plant will affect the railroad, and also discuss whether to stay in Spearfish Lake for a while, plow out towards Camden to help the train coming up from there with Ralph McPhee, or to go back to Warsaw. In the end they decide to return to Warsaw, but to put the snowplow on the end of the train to make it easier to run back to Spearfish Lake. Then they will stay in Warsaw until there is a reason to go back to Spearfish Lake.
