Willie Stein founded Canyon Tours in 1965, running rafts down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. By 1974 he had an ulcer and wanted out of the business. He sold it to one of his experience trip leaders, Louise Buck, who subsequently ran it with another rafter employee of his, Al Buck.

Although he had made Louise a boatman, he refused to promote the experienced swamper, Rachel Rawson, believing one woman boatman at a time was enough.^CF16
