Paul Morgenstern first appears in the book Homestanders as a Master Sergeant in a maintenance battalion in Vietnam. He trained Jason MacRae as a welder and shared his passion for blacksmithing, including the crafting of knives.

The pair sold many knives as souvenirs to other troops while in Vietnam. By quirk, their next assignments reunited the two soldiers in Germany where Jason learned more advanced techniques. "When he finally headed back to Bradford after nearly two and a half years of working with Sergeant Morgenstern, Jason was well grounded in the basics and pretty well had finished his apprenticeship, but like any good journeyman, he had been working on the nuances and the artisanship ever since."^HS3

Jason also credited Sergeant Morgenstern on how to pass on his knowledge when training Kevin Holst years later.^HS31
