Max Pierce was a racer in his late forties or early fifties who lived on the outskirts of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Max had bought an unblown Offenhauser engine but was only able to use it one race due to a rule change. It had sat on a pallet in his shop for years since.
His son, Gary, had commented at the Indy 500 that the engine in Ted Hilyard's car looked a lot like the old unblown Offy my dad has out in his shop. Ginger Marston picked up on the comment and passed contact details for Max to Mel Austin.BR3-28
Mel arranged for Ginger Marston and Ray Austin to drive to Tulsa to buy the old engine. After loading it Max invited Ginger and Ray to dinner where he told them he got hooked on racing when the Midwest Midget Sportsman Association had visited his home town in the early fifties. When he learned that Mel and Arlene Austin had drive for the MMSA he returned the cheque they'd given him for the engine. BR3-33
