Homer C. Smith was a bachelor farmer near Amherst, Michigan that never married and when he died, left his land to his brother's heirs. His brother had two sons, Delmer and Doyle. Doyle's only child was Catalina. His nephew's widow described him as "a sour old fart all the time I knew him, so I guess I'm just as glad that I didn't know him all that well."CAT5
The largest part of his estate was one hundred acres of mixed woods and sixty acres of decent farmland that Delmer tried to buy Catalina's half for $90,000. John Castle was able to provide Catalina with a much better estimate on the value of the wood. When it finally went to auction, the winning bid was $725,000.CAT20
