Harry Bankston was a retired Air Force General^RFW34 who was a glider instructor at Deer Park Soaring Club. He taught Bree Gravengood about mountain wave flying and gave her the opportunity to try it and achieve her Gold and Diamond altitude gain requirements.^RFW33

Harry was the contest director for the soaring regionals at Madison Airpark north of Des Moines. He was impressed with her determination when she was the only pilot to complete the first day's course. He helped Bree plan a Diamond distance flight for the day after the competition.

He took an interest in Bree's career at the Air Force Academy, and attended her graduation.^RFW42
