Glenn Mackey was a Spearfish Lake Vietnam vet. He served at Con Thien and Khe Sanh without a scratch, only to be killed in June 1978 when a drunk driver - a member of the local veteran's Post - ran off the road and ran him down while he was mowing his front lawn. Glenn hadn’t even been near the road; he was halfway across his yard.AF12

At the time of his death, Glenn and his wife Janet had two children, ages five and seven. Janet was unable to cope with the funeral arrangements.

The other area Vietnam vets refused the usual Post honor guard for his funeral, especially because the drunk was a member of the honors firing squad. They provided it themselves much as they had for Henry Toivo, whose death sparked the creation of the The Henry A. Toivo Post 17 of the American Veterans of the Vietnam War in Spearfish Lake.AF14
