Summary
Al wonders whether he's doing the right thing promoting Nanci to boatman sooner than he really wants.
Nanci had finals at Northern Arizona University so she couldn't start the trip. Al takes her to the Kaibab Trail so she can hike down to Phantom Ranch to take her mother's place rowing a raft.
