Dale and Dawn were a couple of just married college kids who met Bob Spheris and Sharon Holdenhoven in the hot tub of a motel near Detroit Metro Airport.^REU16 Surnames were never mentioned.

Their parents were very controlling, members of Disciples of the Savior church. Partners had been picked out for each of them. Once the marriage was arranged Dawn was raped by Burke - the man she'd been promised to.^REU17

Bob and Sharon suggested how they could break free of their parents to live their own lives. They followed up on a number of suggestions and moved to Fort Collins so Bob could help them enrol in Colorado State University. They stayed with Bob for a while when they got to Fort Collins.^REU21
