Andy Petree was the Department of Natural Resources District Forester and DNR Regional Fire Coordinator. He got calls from Mary Tingley at Spearfish County Central requesting assistance in fighting a forest fire. He sent his assistant, Tom Dunning, to Spearfish County to see the extent of the fire and offer advice because all their equipment was tied up at a bigger fire at Hansen Lake.^BHF7

The fire at Hansen Lake had escaped the fire line and he'd had to call in assistance from the Multi-State Compact so had no chance of sending anything to Spearfish County. He told Tom that the decision to fight the fire or let it burn was ultimately the local incident commander's.^BHF17
