Summary
After leaving Durango, they fly over Shiprock and Canyon de Chelly, over the Painted Desert to Winslow for refuelling.
From there they circled Meteor Crater and then went on to the Grand Canyon, which they flew over and then through.
They refuelled at Kingman, where it was suggested that they could fly to Taylor Springs, Nevada, a deserted field where they would certainly be able to camp. Instead, they found the Bullhead Ranch airstrip by mistake, only after landing did they discover that it was a legal Nevada whorehouse. They bought a six pack of beer and made the short run on to Taylor Springs.
From there, they went on to Boulder dam, and then to Death Valley, where they landed briefly at Furnace Valley, and after a few days made it to Pauma Valley (near Mt. Palomar), where, after a visit to the observatory, they picked up mail and Jackie first knew that her mother had died just after they had called home from Durango. They debated trying to get back home, and then called her father and Sarah, who told them that the service had been done and that she had been buried; they should not worry about racing home.
Jackie told Mark that the best part of the trip was that she could think that she was a normal person, not worrying that she would suffer the same fate as her mother. She writes another letter to her family, and tells them that they would come back if wanted, but otherwise were going to continue their trip, probably heading for Yosemite or up the California coast.
