Summary
After a few days, Mark and Jackie leave Waverly and head for Leadville, hoping to do some high country backpacking. Duke and John take them up in "Dirty Thirty", their Cessna 182 and they see that everything is still covered with snow. The reduced air density due to the altitude at Leadville (9927 ft, 3025m) significantly increases the runway length required for a takeoff, and they aren't able to take off that afternoon. Just before daybreak, a breeze comes up, and they just make it off the ground and fly to Salida for gas.
