In 2002 he was considered for promotion when Dick Steward, the Editor in Chief, retired, but Haynes' unpleasant manner and his dislike of Dave's novel, which everybody else thought was excellent, finally resulted in Rob Dunlap firing him.^PUTP42 That Haynes allowed Mike Pittman to get away with the deal he did with Larissa Hamilton added weight in preventing his promotion.^PUTP37
