Pat Varner worked at the Spearfish Lake Record-Herald as the junior reporter, succeeding Andy Bairnsfether. He handled all of the sports news except for football, which was a big enough deal in Spearfish Lake that Mike McMahon preferred to handle that himself. Pat had been an English Lit major, with drama and journalism minors.

Pat attended the 1987 West Turtle Lake Club Halloween party dressed as Shakespeare, complete with "beard, bald head, ruffled collar, baggy shorts and tights."BAR788

It was Pat that went to the school to photograph a 9 year old Tiffany McMahon-Langenderfer when she drove herself and her brother to school by dogsled.BAR7115

Pat had been asked to direct a high school play one year. He suggested doing A Midsummer Night's Dream. He did not end up directing after all.FtS15

By 1997, Pat Varner had left Spearfish Lake and the Herald and was junior drama critic for the New York Times.
