John Emerson was a rural mailman who drove a mail route out of the Amboy post office to the east of Spearfish Lake. He was a lean, wiry man with a salt-and-pepper beard. Long ago he’d been a Marlin track star, and was still an active runner.
Just as a hobby, he coached the girls cross country and track teams at Spearfish Lake High School. He wanted the girls on his teams to get into shape, have fun, and to get some satisfaction from competing. His goal for a season was for every girl on his team to medal at least once in the season.RFW12
