Jane Marshall was the title character in the book Plain Jane. A graduate of University of Colorado Boulder with a degree in Art History, she is unable to find any work related to her degree and is working as hostess at the Mountain Grove restaurant in Boulder at the start of the book. She was unsuccessfully looking for another job worrying that she may have to give up and return home to Hartford, NE.
She was intrigued by Sophia Rosenvold's idea of arranging a marriage for Rick Thredford and found herself agreeing to become his wife, despite her reservations.
