Homer Sanderson was the owner and publisher of the Spearfish Lake Record-Herald for years. Homer's grandfather, Abraham Sanderson, founded the Spearfish Lake Record in 1888. "Abraham's son Stanley took over the paper in 1904 and soon bought out the Spearfish Lake Herald, combining the two. He managed the paper until 1929."AF11
Homer had one son, Rodney who was a member of "D" Battery, 156th Artillery, the local National Guard unit commanded by Col. Garth Matson. The unit was called up in the summer of 1940 and shipped out for World War 2. Rodney died when his jeep hit a land mine in Italy in 1944.WTLC2
Homer also had three daughters, but none stayed in Spearfish Lake. Homer died in August 1979.
It was to Homer Sanderson that Kirsten Langenderfer applied and won a job as an Advertising Salesperon in summer of 1973.
Homer Sanderson was old fashioned, "although a likeable old cuss, could be cranky at times and slow to do the things that needed to be done. "AF13 Up until his death he insisted that the front office staff wear ties or skirts, as gender applied. This was before air conditioning was installed in the newpaper office. Sometime after his death Mike McMahon "ceremonially took off his tie and threw it in the wastebasket, ending forever the days of Sanderson's prohibition of open collars on the men and pants on the women."
