Summary

The second night out from St John's, Newfoundland, after they'd eaten Matt sent Mary below so she could get some sleep before taking over the watch at midnight. He sat thinking about Mary, how different she was from Stephanie and the other girls his mother had tried to set him up with. He thought that Laurel would have loved the trip, but without her death he might never have thought of it.

Despite the red sunset, Matt saw clouds in the distance warning of worse weather to come. He toook some star sights with the sextant, and a GPS reading for comparison, and would work out the position from them in the daylight.

At sunrise of the third day it was clear that bad weather was coming from the west. Once Mary was back on watch, Matt made breakfast before working out his star sights. He was satisfied when the GPS reading was within the triangle his sights gave for their position. They were now about 180 miles out of St John's. Before he turned in they changed course more directly towards Ireland.

Early in the evening they reefed the sails while they had light to see, before Matt went below to sleep. He woke having trouble staying in the bunk because they were on the opposite tack. With the weather worsening they took in another reef and left the self-steering gear to hold the course while they both went below.
