Birgit Langenderfer was a German war bride (Her husband was Karl Langenderfer) and came to the country in 1949 not speaking much English; she was still considerably more comfortable in German than she was in English more than a half century later.
While her daughter, Kirsten Langenderfer, was working, Birgit had been granddaughter Susan’s main babysitter. She didn’t mind, having recently retired and looking for something to do. Susan called her Oma Birgit. As a result, Susan grew up fluent in German, which eventually lead her to spend a year in Germany as an exchange student.SU2
