Alice Bell was a thirteen year old in 1955 when she caught polio.
- "She never had to be in one of the ventilators, but the paralysis hit her just as hard. I have to say that the steps she took up the stairs to get to bed the night the polio hit her were the last steps she ever took without the aid of braces, crutches, or canes. She spent most of the rest of her high school career in a wheelchair... She eventually moved away. The last I heard, and this was many years ago, she’d gotten married to a man who was also a polio victim, and they’d built a pretty good life." FK21
