Vam Cai Cung is Dong Kien Thanh's cousin, who is brought in to the Toivo expedition. Initially he is most useful to the group because he has a 3/4 ton truck AF43. Because he has much better English than the other Vietnamese, he is later used as an interpreter. We later learn that this is because he worked with the Americans at Tan Son Nhut for ten years because they paid better AF44. We finally learn that he originally fought for the North Vietnamese and was wounded at Dien Bat, an engagement where Bud Ellsberg was also present AF45. Despite this the two former enemies become friends.
