How realistic is Matt's story?

Based on the dates of Winchester Harbor , Matthew was born in the early 1980s so his leukemia was diagnosed and treated around 1995. His story told in Blanche Tickle Girl takes place somewhere in the period 2004-2009.

In the 1980s I worked as a medical photographer in an oncology unit. The oncologist who specialised in childhood leukemia fairly often had me photograph families where one of the parents had been her patient. I think she showed the pictures to parents of new patients as an indication of the success of treatment.

I am not a doctor and understand that each clinical case is different, but it seems to me that Matt's story would fit the medicine of 20 to 30 years before it is set.
