Locations
- Flying from Oceanside (south of Los Angeles, northwest of San Diego) to Santa Catalina Island
Characters
- Chief Daugherty of the Santa Catalina Coast Guard Station
Summary
Although a little risky, Mark and Jackie decide to fly the 45 miles of open ocean from Oceanside to Catalina Island. Lost in thought over her mother's death, Jackie stared out the window during the flight, so she was the one that spotted an overturned boat, many miles from land. Using the aircraft radio emergency frequency they call in the situation to El Toro Naval Air Station, who notifies the Coast Guard. They orbit the small craft until a Coast Guard cutter arrived from Avalon, on Catalina Island. They learn the couple on the boat had overturned the day before and both were very weak. They probably saved the couple's lives.
Their arrival at Catalina is almost anticlimactic. They refill their fuel tanks and prepare to leave when they're asked to contact the Coast Guard who want their names for the incident report and a commendation. Feeling like the rescue was more than just luck, they decide they'll go to church on Sunday. Jackie also writes a letter home, but can't bring herself to tell the whole adventure, saving it for another time.
