Leo Rasmussen is a real person.
Over the years he has volunteered as a finish-line checker, President of Iditarod National Historic Trail Inc., President of the Iditarod board of directors from 1988 to 1991, and six-term mayor of Nome, northern terminus of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race (the actual name of the annual race).
