Derek Wood was a student at Black Mesa College who Nanci Chladek met in Ancient Greek and Roman Mythology class.DBR23
He was older; in fact, he’d retired from the Army a couple of years before and had been glad he’d retired in time to not to be involved in the mess in Iraq.
He was far more intelligent than Nanci would have expected from a former infantry sergeant.
Nanci became fairly close to Derek and his wife. They made good, solid sounding boards when Nanci wanted to talk things out. She felt it was important for her to make at least a few friends who weren’t involved in her life in other ways, and the Woods provided that.
