Summary

The Albany River fire department have arrived and are waiting at Rick's Cafe, as he's decided to stay open. Kate & Betty have a lot of organising to do for the evacuees, she contacts the Spearfish Lake Women's Club to call around to arrange beds, Sheriff Upton arranges transport, and Rick & the supermarket arranged coffee and snacks. When the train arrives Bud compliments Kate & Betty on dealing with the problem, heading off Kate's tirade about not being given enough warning. Bud hears that a boy has been born, already being called Stormy. The fire chief of Walsenerg was upset that no-one had sent a plow out to help him get to Warsaw, but Linder was too pleased to see them to get too upset, and directs them to the warehouse fire. Ed Sloat tells Bud that the problem with the engine that was failing was the snow had got into the traction motors and was shorting them out. Bruce Marshall gets a break at the school, organised by Jim Horton. He asks Linder if it could be arson, but Linder reports from what Clay Whitehall said it was probably a faulty motor in the door.

Bud asks the National Guard Captain for gas masks to help deal with the toxic smoke. Bud tries to think of where to get more resources, then remembers the D&O engine stranded on the C&SL, so rings Les Marks for assistance. He gets his agreement to send some crew up from Camden with Bud's Camden crew, Ralph McPhee and Harold Stevens. He will also look into sending a train up the abandoned Kremmling Branch that D&O really want to tear up.
