Summary
In Colorado, Mark suggests that they take a sailplane ride. They end up at Waverly West, and both get a ride; Mark wants to try again later in the day when he may be able to ride a thermal, and finds out that Jack is an instructor qualified for powered aircraft, and would be able to get Jackie to where she could get her license. Mark flies again and gets a good ride on a thermal, flying with an eagle for a bit. They get permission to camp near the gliderport after being warned to stay away from the hanger after dark; Cumulus is the friendliest dog in the world during daylight, but a ferocious watchdog at night.
Paul gets a phone call and finds out that his father is in serious condition in a hospital after his car was hit by a train. He leaves, and Fred is concerned that he won't have a tow pilot after the weekend. Mark has a commercial license and meets their requirements; at the end of the chapter Fred is about to take him out for a check ride in the tow plane - a Piper Super Cub.
