Summary

After visiting Charleston, SC, Mark and Jackie are undecided about how to spend the next few months. They don't want to return to Spearfish Lake, but are not sure where they can find work to keep them going until spring. They fly south, and on a whim stop at Twillingate. Paul Thibodeaux tells them that Bessie is not doing well, and offers to hire both of them, Mark to help with phone work, and Jackie to help Bessie and tend the switchboard. Needing a place to live, they are able to get the use of a shantyboat, and meet Samuel, an old mullet fisherman who helps them move the boat downstream to Twillingate, where they have dinner with Brother Erasmus and Ethelyne and settle in on the shantyboat for a few months..
