Summary
Mark and Jackie arrive at the Texas Star Party, and while he sets up the bigger telescope with an equatorial mount that his father had sent down. they are also very interested in the other telescopes that had been set up, particularly the 12 foot monster with a 24 inch mirror that John Dobson had set up.
After the star party, they headed for Carlsbad Caverns, where they took a long tour of the caverns, and then camped out on the desert that night, where they heard a strange moaning sound, sometimes higher in pitch, and sometimes lower; sometimes louder, and sometimes softer; they didn't get a lot of sleep that night. The people at the airport didn't have a good explanation for the sounds, so they wrote it off as weird at the time.
They spend the next night in a motel in Raton, New Mexico, where they are able to rinse off in the pool and shower.
