John Pacobel was a teacher at the Spearfish Lake High School in 1987.^BAR05 He teaches biology, chemistry and an advanced biology class.^BAR70 He also coaches the girls softball team.

John was an Army Reserve Captain and commander of the Spearfish Lake National Guard, "D" Battery, 156^th Artillery, at least in 1981.^{SX05 SX15 BAR113} He retired from teaching in 1988 and moved to Washington DC.^BAR120

John is divorced with a single daughter, Linda. Linda is called Joanie by those outside the family. Joanie, about the same age as Brandy Evachevski, was on the same state finals softball team which John coached and nearly lost by using Joanie when Brandy was the better player.^BAR05 Joanie ended up valedictorian, but she took much easier classes while Brandy took hard math and science classes.^FtS02 Joanie had married and left home by 1987.^BAR107

In 1987, John Pacobel is a High School Biology teacher when a mystery snake is brought to him for identification by Linda Clark. He identifies it as a Northern Water Snake, but "Something wasn't right, but he couldn't put a finger on it."^BAR05 To keep Danny Evachevski and Josh Archer busy, he asks them to research it further.^BAR07 John next passed it on to a former student (and lover) of his, Pam Appleton.^BAR09

John made friends with Heather Sanford as she investigated the possible Gibson's Water Snake and was supportive of her efforts to clear criminals from Defenders of Gaea.^BAR113 After the scandal broke, John was elected vice-president/treasurer of the charity with a seat on the board. He married Heather in Las Vegas in February 1988 and they were expecting a child.^BAR120

John is described by Heather as "He had to be ten years or more older than she was, a handsome guy, with dark hair shot with gray, and a gentle voice."^BAR59 As the West Turtle Lake Club Halloween party of 1987, John dressed as Little Lord Flauntleroy.^BAR90
