Jerry Palmer started as a swamper with Canyon Tours in 1997, and continued as a boatman after graduating from college in 1999. On a 1999 trip that included Randy Clark and Crystal Chladek he had a serious accident rockclimbingDW69, RR18; Randy had just completed EMT training and his actions saved Jerry's life.
In later books, he is described as a "bit of a cowboy". In 2001 he hooks up with Kelly, who is not happy about his summer schedule, which only has him home for a day or two every third weekend. Al Buck comes up with a personnel switch that solves this and another problem, when he trades Jerry to GCR in exchange for Jim GriffinRR57 later that summer.
