Karin Johansen was born in Spearfish Lake sometime in 1950. She goes for a raft trip down the Grand Canyon (Dawnwalker Chapter 1), and has a brief romance with a boatman, AL Buck. When she returns to Glen Ellyn she marries Pete Chladek, unaware that she is already pregnant. Karin names her first child after one of the rapids and the woman that lead the trip - Crystal Louise. Eventually, after his behaviour has driven away two of their children, Karin leaves Pete, and returns to the Grand Canyon to re-connect with Crystal. There she meets up again with Al, who is mourning the death of his wife Louise. Karin & Al rekindle thie romance, and plan to get married.
