Gil Evachevski, a former Green Beret, served in Viet Nam. Married to Carrie Matson and together they have five children, Jennifer, Garth, Brandy, Tara and Daniel.

According to clues in Absent Friend Gil graduated from High School and enlisted in the Army in 1951 so he was probably born in 1933 or 1934. Gil and Carrie were married in 1961 and spent the first three years of their marriage, 1961 to 1964, stationed in Germany where Jennifer (1961) and then Garth (1963) were born. Gil spent a tour in Vietnam between 1964 and 1965. Gil and Carrie were then stationed at Ft. Bragg NC from 1965 to 1968. While at Bragg Brandy was born in April of 1966 and Tara in March of 1968. They were next stationed back in Germany from 1968 until 1971. Their last, Daniel was born in Germany in 1970. Gil retired in 1971 and the family moved back to Spearfish Lake.

Gil runs an appliance store downtown Spearfish Lake. He along with others in the community have informal self defense meetings each Wednesday evening in the rooms above the store.

Gil was a main force in returning to Vietnam to locate the remains of Henry Toivo as told in Absent Friend.

Gil is 1/8 Shakahatche Indian, via his mother, Bernice Parker, his maternal grandmother, Alice Morton, and maternal Great Grandmother, Mary ElkstalkerSQ43.
