Ken is a lead character in The Next Generation. He is persuaded to take Judy Niven to the high school prom, despite the fact that she was crippled in a car accident a number of years before. It's a success and he invites her over to the farm to have a ride on a horse. whilst there Ken's father has a piece of farm machinery fall on him that Judy lifts off him. They begin to date regularly. Ken starts to go to college, as it is intended for his elder brother Tom to take over the farm, and it isn't big enough to support two families. The death of both his father and brother mean that the farm falls to Ken. The farm is in financial trouble, and the only way Ken can keep it going is to abandon a lot of what his father and brother had been doing. In Facing the Storm Ken and Judy are expecting their fourth child.
