In 1987 Heather Sanford is a staff member of Defenders of Gaea (she has a special talent) and is a true beliver in the cause. She is sent to Spearfish Lake to look after the interest of the snake.
In the process she alienates many of the locals with her opposition to deer hunting and dog sled racing, becomes disillusioned with the Defenders and with assistance from John Pacobel exposes the fraudulent actions of Harris Harper and Dale McMullen and finally marries John.
