Summary
On Scooter's 4th trip, Louise should have led, but is not well enough, so Al leads, although he feels he should have arranged things so that he could stay up as well. At the ranger station Al phones to find that Louise has cancer, and isn't expected to survive, so he hikes out, leaving Crystal to lead, with Scooter as her assistant.
