Although a little risky, Mark and Jackie decide to fly the 26 miles of open ocean to Catalina Island. Lost in thought over her mother's death, Jackie stared out the window during the flight, so she was the one that spotted the overturned sailboat. With the emergency called in on the radio, the pair circled the small craft until the Coast Guard cutter arrived. They learn the couple on the boat had overturned the day before and both were very weak. They probably saved the couple's lives.

The final arrival at Catalina is almost anticlimactic. They refill their tanks and prepare to leave when they're told to contact the Coast Guard who want their names for the commendation. Feeling like the rescue was more than just luck, they decide they'll go to church on Sunday. Jackie also writes a letter home, but can't bring herself to tell the whole adventure, saving it for another time.
